I just spent the past two days looking for a new place in New York City. I’ll probably need to spend the next two days resting and recovering. It’s not that finding a place in the city is a rare event. On the contrary, it’s actually fairly easy to find a place. But finding the place is a different story.
In New York City, you have to compromise on something: price, location, quality, even cleanliness (there was no way I was going to compromise on this aspect, I can tell you that). After spending my entire life frustrated by the commutes of DC, I told myself that my primary criteria was location.
I wanted to be as close as possible to campus. Stern is located in Greenwich Village, and if you know anything about this area (or the West Village), you know that high-rises, modern apartments, and even elevators can be a rare thing. Finding these amenities at a “cheap” price is pretty much impossible.
That’s why my roommate and I (also another Sternie) found ourselves walking around the entire village for hours on end without much luck. None of the apartments that we saw had everything we wanted. Some had elevators but no dishwashers or AC. Others had two full bedrooms but no space to walk. Ultimately, we went from one apartment to another trying to find something that we could live in.
After two days of searching, we finally found a place. In fact, it was one of the first apartments we saw. The first time we saw it, we didn’t think much of it. It’s not that it was bad, but we just didn’t know what to expect. That quickly changed after we saw several other apartments that were all lacking in one way or another.
I’m pretty happy with my new place, and think that it has a lot of potential. I just applied for it today (the NYC application process is pretty involved) and there shouldn’t be a problem with getting it. I’m looking forward to moving in and starting school. When that happens, I’ll let you know.
